Unless you are from Mars or from a foreign country, it is likely you have heard and/or experienced the benefits of protein powder. And, if you know anything about me and my lifestyle you know I am the “Meher Baba” of protein shakes (Yeah, look it up).
Protein is my dessert. It’s my pre and post workout. It’s my snack. It’s what makes me feel like Betty Crocker when I get creative with personal recipes. And, while I’m not a fan of using a protein supplement as a meal replacement, I do support taking a protein supplement daily. I’ve tried several different protein powders and here’s my unofficial, non-professional breakdown of my top choices…
New Dawn Nutraceutical’s FA Prime is my new favorite. It literally has SO MANY FLAVORS!!! Coming from a local business here in Omaha, Brandon (the owner) has created his own products and has scored a home run with his Protein Isolate (among all his other products). With its high percentage of BCAA content and natural bioactive components, FA Prime is a great choice for an AMAZING price. With its natural ingredients and proteins that support lean muscle growth and anabolic metabolism this isolate is a great option for supplementation of protein into your diet. You can’t get this kind of quality for this price that I know of. And while I am not in any way sponsored or associated with New Dawn Nutrition, I love the stuff they sell and am a frequent customer. As for the taste (I love the vanilla, Ice-cream Sandwich, and Cake Batter, but the Cinnamon Toast and Fruity Flakes taste just like the cereal! The peanut butter cup is pretty awesome too and there is about 10 more flavors I haven’t tried yet!) and I have never had digestive issues with it at all. WINNER!
Procomplete V-Core from Complete Nutrition was one of my favorites for a long time. First, V-Core is a blend of three proteins: whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and casein. This trio blend allows your body to absorb the full 20 grams of protein over an eight-hour period. That means V-Core keeps your metabolism rolling for eight hours – High five for that! Because these three proteins are absorbed at different speeds, your body receives the benefits of an immediate absorption of protein as well as the benefits of a prolonged absorption of protein.
The second reason “I heart V-Core” is because I’ve never experienced any digestion problems this protein. Third, it blends great in water, unsweetened almond milk, or any other liquid of your choice (keep it lean). And finally, the taste and texture of this protein is one of the best on the markets – Swear!
Iso-Z5 from Complete Nutrition is the fastest digesting protein that Complete Nutrition offers. Iso-Z5 is absorbed into your system within 30 minutes of consumption – That’s 157% faster than any non-isolate protein on the market. The fast digestion on Iso-Z5 ensures a high absorption of the added amino acids which help build and repair your muscles. Taste? Not the greatest but not terrible.
100% Whey protein from Hy-Vee is an okay, fall back on protein. While the label says this product contains protein isolate and protein concentrate (which is good), personally, I have experienced digestion and tummy issues associated with this product. Obviously, Hy-Vee isn’t focused on providing the best protein possible, and they definitely don’t have doctor/health professionals creating these proteins to be top quality, however when it comes to calories this protein is on right on track. I do not suggest buying your proteins from Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Costco, or Hy-Vee (etc.) due to the low quality and high preservatives in their proteins, but any protein supplement is better than none.
My suggestion to anyone investing in protein powders as a catalyst to their fitness or weight loss journey is… DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Not all proteins are the same. Think about what you want to achieve as far as your goals and get a protein powder that is compatible.
